Familiarity

Familiarity

Face with features printed on wallpaper
Body no longer polluting her thoughts
Familiar thumbprints
Feelings have risen and faded
As a heat-born spirit’s ascension
From black streets in desert night
Neutrality not hatred
Has replaced love
Yet, she passes her hand
Across his troubled forehead as he sleeps
Gazing down in silence, then
Once again staring out at autumn
Tired and stripping the trees
